Mara has spent two years rebuilding her life after her ex-fiancé dumped her in the rain to fulfill his destiny as the Chosen One. She has a stable insurance job, a loyal best friend, and a dating profile that describes her as "low-drama." She's fine. Then, Bodin the Brave walks into her office with a bugle announcement and a confession: he didn't actually save the world.

Turns out Bodin misunderstood the prophecy. The shadows he "defeated" are back, freezing people in loops of their worst regrets, and the only way to stop them requires his first love (ahem, Mara) to retrieve an ancient artifact. Unfortunately for him, she wants nothing to do with destiny, prophecies, or her photogenic ex with his perfectly floppy brown hair.

But when the shadows attack her office and trap her best friend in a nightmare, Mara does the unthinkable to save her: sets out on a quest with Bodin. She signs the literal liability waivers (because even apocalypses require paperwork) and joins the quest alongside Bodin, his politically-strategic warrior princess fiancée, and a guilt-ridden mercenary who is proving to be more than she bargained for.

As the shadows close in and Mara discovers the prophecy's true cost, she must decide whether to sacrifice herself for a destiny she never chose - or rewrite the prophecy and fight for a future of her own making.
